GU13 Red Aloha International Cup

August 13th, 2010

In their last tournament as 12 year-olds the Scripps United GU13 Red travelled to Hawaii for the Aloha International Cup.  The celebrations were many as 51 teammates and family toured the beautiful island of Oahu and competed in a tough soccer tournament. The group snorkeled at Hanauma Bay, visited the Pearl Harbor Memorial, jumped off 30 ft cliffs at Waimea Bay, ate shrimp on the north shore and enjoyed Hawaiian sunsets together every evening. The girls traded gifts with the other teams and won the hearts of the all the locals with their passion on and off the field. The Hawaiians whispered to us that they couldn’t help but to root for “the mainlanders”. Our team finished 2-1 in pool play  and went on to upset the Leahi 98 Premier in a long and tough semi-final after over-time and penalty kicks. That same afternoon Scripps met the Hawaii State Cup champs in the finals and played to a 0-0 tie. Hawaii Rush Nike won the tournament after more overtime and 7 penalty kicks. I have never been more proud of our girls and their display of guts and grace throughout 240 minutes of soccer and two sets of PK’s in one hot Hawaiian day!
